With Eddie we didn't really want any help with names. We didn't really do much besides kick around a ton of names (I checked a bunch of websites), checked to see where they ranked on the social security list (didn't want a name too popular or too far out--but that is a not completely reliable method, I've found), and then a couple days before Eddie came, his name was the one that at that point, neither of us was completely rejecting. We just couldn't agree on the boy's name--except his middle name.
This time, we are in a similar situation, except that I've purchased 4 baby name books, that while quite interesting, haven't resulted in a name. We continue to suggest names to each other and then the other isn't completely thrilled with the name. I'm interested in some ideas. So, lemme have 'em. Following are the guidelines:
1. Must be submitted via the comments on the blog--no emails to me please--I have 1400 that need to be read before the baby arrives--and I'm not exagerating.
2. Must not be offended if we don't pick your suggestion(s) or anything close
3. Must be a name that is not so far out in either spelling or name that people stumble with
4. Must be a name that can have a nickname that clearly derives from the original name. For instance, we call Edward everything from Ed to Eddie to Mr. Ed, but not Ward. Not that I don't like Ward--reminds me of a simplier time, but does't seem like it relates to his first name.
5. No androgonous names--nothing wrong with these, but we want it to be clear it's a boy.
5. Last, but most important, no girls names. We are all set with the girl's name from last time and we don't need to muddy the waters.
Okay, lets see what you come up with...

I posted something 4 hours ago and I don't see it, so at the risk of repeating myself I am writing it again: I have two name suggestions, the first one is William which can be shortened to Wil, Will, or Willie and would complement Edward. The second suggestion is to go with a name that starts with D to balance out Eliz, Ed and Denis, D...Again, so it doesn't clash with Edward I would choose Donald or Donovan.
Good luck.

I can't help but add a name----it was my favorite---Daniel. Danny. I love it. I also like Henry with Hank as the nickname. And you really can't go wrong with a little Joey. Seriously.

I don't have any specific suggestions, but I'll express my general preference for old-fashioned names. Not necessarily biblical, but not ones invented in this country.
Also, for the sake of future teachers and the kid himself, pleeeeeease don't pick one of the superpopular names this year! It sucks to be one of five Brittanys in a class (don't laugh -- it happened to me last year. Not being a Brittany but teaching five of them).
Truth is, you can name him Fifi Trixiebelle and we'll love him just as much. We might love you a little less, of course... ;-)
Debbra my parapro says Addison, you are going to add a son.
It's a very old name.
I like the name William and you can call him Will, Daniel and call him Dan.
I have a hard time with the name Donovan as I had a student with that name that was very annoying. I hope you both like some of the suggestions.
I am taking back Joey. I like that name, but Joey Jones, Joe Jones. No, it is not good.
You could go with Theodore---then you would have Teddy and Eddie!

I like Philip best of that list.
I know I'll love the little one no matter what the name. It always seems an immediate fit once the name is tried out. Can you imagine another name for our Eddie?

I redid the list. Alphabetized them. I agree with Gma. Once they're named, you can't imagine a rose by any other.
